Samsung Repurposes NRD-K Line for 2nm HBM, Targeting 2028 Launch

Woofun AI reports that Samsung Electronics is redesignating its Line NRD-K 2 in the Gyeonggi-do R&D complex from a research facility to a wafer foundry line. The facility will focus on producing 2nm-based chips for NVIDIA's HBM applications, with operations expected to commence in the second half of 2028. The line will operate under a 'Send-Fab' model, processing wafers received from other mass production lines. This adjustment addresses growing HBM demand driven by AI infrastructure investments, prioritizing custom HBM and HBM5 products. While previously considered for DRAM, capacity is now concentrated in Pyeongtaek. Equipment orders remain unissued, and the final purpose may shift based on market conditions.
