New Bitcoin Addresses Surge 330,000 Weekly Amid Coldcard Vulnerability Fallout

Weekly new BTC address creation jumps to over 330,000, reversing a long-term downtrend as users migrate funds following the Coinkite security breach and loss of $116M.

Woofun AI data shows that the number of new Bitcoin addresses climbed from approximately 260,000 last week to more than 330,000 this week, breaking a downward trajectory that defined most of 2026. This spike correlates with wallet migration activities triggered by the Coldcard vulnerability incident.

Since July 30, attackers have stolen at least 1,816 BTC, valued at roughly $116 million, across four distinct waves targeting Coinkite hardware wallet users. The exploit originated from a 2021 firmware defect that substituted the device's hardware entropy source with a weaker software random number generator for seed phrase creation, enabling brute-force attacks on offline wallets. Coinkite has instructed users who generated wallets between March 2021 and the patch release to transfer assets to new addresses.
